Fostering solidarity among workers, community members, and students.

The Labor Education Center’s community work is featured in a national report to the AFL-CIO by the United Association for Labor Education. The report, titled Education for Change: How Labor Education Centers and AFL-CIO Bodies Can Grow and Transform Together, highlights our Center’s impact and was written by Katherine Sciacchitano.

Established in 1975, the Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center meets the educational needs of workers as members and leaders in the labor movement, and as engaged citizens in the community. The Center’s objectives are:

  • Provide non-credit courses, conferences, seminars, and special programs in labor education for workers and unions.
  • Offer support and consultation to labor organizations in developing and delivering their own educational programs.
  • Provide technical and informational resources to workers and unions.
  • Integrate labor concerns and contributions into the university’s curricula and activities.
  • Serve as a liaison and promote cooperation between the university and labor organizations, increasing the use of university resources by workers and unions.
  • Promote greater community awareness of the history and current situation of workers and labor organizations.
  • Promote greater understanding and cooperation between labor and business, religious, environmental, civic, and communityorganizations.

The Labor Education Center has actively educated the broader community and honored the Longshoremen's Union in New Bedford. This union has significantly improved work and living conditions for many Cape Verdean immigrants and other workers. In partnership with the Working Waterfront Festival, the Center co-sponsored an event celebrating the union's history and contributions to the community.
