Balance Due

Currently Registered Students

When you register for classes, you agree to the student Financial Responsibility Agreement and accept responsibility for paying all tuition, fees, and other costs associated with your registration and services you receive.

Your bill must either be paid in full or covered through financial aid and/or loans. If your account has an outstanding balance and you haven't made satisfactory payment arrangements, a $75 late fee will be added to your account and a financial hold will be placed on your record. The full balance, including the late fee, must be paid before the hold can be released.

We send reminders throughout the semester to students and Authorized Users with past due balances who haven't made payment arrangements. You may see a hold in your COIN account if there is a balance due. Learn more about holds.

A financial hold prevents you from:

  • Registering for a future semester
  • Receiving official transcripts
  • Receiving your diploma
  • Using University services, including housing, dining, and library access
  • Picking up your cap and gown

A few important things to know:

  • Not attending class is not the same as withdrawing, and it doesn't release you from your financial obligation.
  • f you leave or withdraw from Â鶹¹ÙÍø Dartmouth, you're still responsible for your full account balance and any external housing charges (such as Balsam & Spruce), or for making payment arrangements with the University's Collection Specialist.
  • Keep your address and contact information up to date in COIN for Students.
If your employer reimburses your tuition, you must pay upfront. The University cannot accept reimbursement arrangements that depend on your grades.

Non-Registered Students

If you'd like to return to Â鶹¹ÙÍø Dartmouth, your prior balance must be paid in full before you can register for an upcoming semester, pick up your cap and gown, or receive a transcript or diploma.

Inactive students can submit an inquiry to update an address, phone number, or email. Just include your name, student ID number, and the new contact information. (All active students, including those on an approved leave of absence, should make these updates in COIN for Students.)

What happens to unpaid balances:

  • If your balance remains unpaid one month after the semester ends, we'll email you a pre-collections notice with the option to set up a repayment agreement or make payment arrangements with the University's Collection Specialist.
  • If you don't respond, your account will be sent to a collection agency authorized under the Commonwealth's Master Service Agreement. You'll be responsible for all collection costs and fees, which can be substantial.
  • Accounts that remain unresolved may be reported to the State of Massachusetts Intercept Program. Visit the Massachusetts Department of Revenue – Refund Intercepts page to learn more.

Transcript Release

Official transcripts and diplomas cannot be released to anyone with an outstanding balance. All balances must be paid in full before graduation — this includes students planning to continue into a Â鶹¹ÙÍø Dartmouth graduate program. Unofficial transcripts are available regardless of holds; more information is available online.

Collections

Â鶹¹ÙÍø Dartmouth is authorized to use collection agencies. Students with a balance who are not enrolled for the current semester may be referred to collections, reported to credit bureaus, and held responsible for collection costs and fees, including reasonable attorney's fees.
